Coinbase Wins US Regulatory Nod for Round-the-Clock Crypto Derivatives
The cryptocurrency exchange has secured approval from US regulators to operate a derivatives clearing house, strengthening its position in the digital assets market. The move enables Coinbase to offer continuous trading and settlement services for stablecoin-based derivatives.

Coinbase Clearing LLC has received formal registration from the US Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) as a Derivatives Clearing Organisation, marking a significant regulatory milestone for the cryptocurrency platform. The authorisation allows Coinbase to operate a clearing house for derivatives products around the clock, seven days a week, without the constraints of traditional market hours.
The CFTC registration completes Coinbase's build-out of a fully regulated derivatives infrastructure in the United States. The clearing house will facilitate the settlement of trades involving USD Coin (USDC), a stablecoin pegged to the US dollar, enabling institutional and retail traders to execute derivatives contracts with continuous availability.
The development reflects growing appetite among US regulators to establish a formal framework for cryptocurrency derivatives trading. By registering Coinbase Clearing as a recognised clearing organisation, the CFTC signals its willingness to integrate digital asset markets into traditional financial oversight structures.
Coinbase's regulatory approvals across spot trading, derivatives exchanges, and now clearing operations position the platform as one of the most comprehensively licensed cryptocurrency venues in the United States. The 24/7 clearing capability addresses a key advantage of cryptocurrency markets—their continuous operation—while subjecting them to established regulatory safeguards.
