A Colombian architect has developed an innovative building system using interlocking bricks manufactured from recycled plastic and rubber, offering a practical solution to housing shortages in disaster-affected and displaced communities. The Lego-like blocks can be assembled without conventional materials such as glue, cement, or water, significantly reducing construction complexity and costs.
The system was deployed in Guapi, Colombia, where it was used to construct shelters for 42 displaced families in 2015. The modular construction method proved remarkably efficient, with a team of four workers capable of assembling a 40-square-metre house in just five days. This rapid assembly capability addresses critical housing needs in regions experiencing population displacement or natural disasters.
The recycled plastic brick technology represents a dual sustainability benefit by diverting waste materials from landfills while providing affordable housing solutions. The blocks are durable and can be configured for both temporary emergency shelters and permanent residential structures, offering flexibility in their application. The system's simplicity requires minimal technical expertise, making it accessible to communities with limited construction resources.
