Colombo received 129 millimetres of rainfall over a concentrated period, a deluge that has sparked fresh concerns about the capital's vulnerability to flooding and its strained water management systems.

The volume of rain, concentrated in just a few hours, exceeded normal precipitation rates and tested the city's drainage capacity. Low-lying areas and flood-prone zones across Colombo reported water accumulation, with transport disruptions reported in several neighbourhoods as roads became waterlogged.

The incident underscores persistent challenges facing the capital's infrastructure. Colombo's ageing drainage network, combined with rapid urbanisation and encroachment on wetlands, has reduced the city's natural water absorption capacity. Environmental experts have long flagged these vulnerabilities, warning that concentrated heavy downpours pose escalating risks.

The Meteorology Department attributed the rainfall to seasonal weather patterns affecting the Western Province. Officials have urged residents in vulnerable areas to remain vigilant and authorities to strengthen disaster preparedness measures.

City planners and environmental advocates have renewed calls for comprehensive infrastructure upgrades and restoration of natural water retention systems to mitigate future flood risks in Colombo.
