Colombo relaunches bus priority lanes as pilot programme
Colombo's bus priority lane scheme returned to operation on 29 September as a pilot initiative designed to streamline public transport and reduce commuter delays across the city and surrounding areas.

The Transport Ministry has reactivated the bus priority lane system, implementing it across seven designated corridors in Colombo and nearby zones. The scheme operates during peak commuting hours—6 a.m. to 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. daily—with the stated aim of improving the reliability and speed of bus services.
Under the pilot programme, the priority lanes are reserved exclusively for buses during these windows, allowing public transport vehicles to bypass general traffic congestion. The initiative targets one of Sri Lanka's most congested urban areas, where traffic delays have long plagued commuters and undermined the efficiency of the public transport network.
The relaunch reflects government efforts to prioritize mass transit as a solution to traffic management in Colombo. By providing buses with dedicated road space during high-demand periods, authorities hope to make public transport a more predictable and attractive option for daily commuters, potentially reducing overall congestion.
The pilot phase will test the effectiveness of the enforcement system and measure the impact on bus journey times and passenger experience. Officials plan to evaluate the scheme's performance before determining whether to expand or modify the programme further.
