Colombo's TB burden linked to urban density, cases trending down

Health Minister Nalinda Jayatissa told Parliament on Wednesday that Colombo's densely populated urban environment remains a key factor driving tuberculosis transmission in the city. Responding to a question raised by MP Mujibur Rahuman, Jayatissa noted that 968 TB cases were recorded in Colombo, underscoring the public health challenge posed by the capital's congested living conditions.

Despite the significant case load, the Health Ministry reported encouraging progress in controlling the disease. Jayatissa emphasized that TB case numbers have followed a declining trajectory since 2023, suggesting that existing intervention strategies are yielding results despite the challenging urban epidemiology.

The minister's remarks reflect the complex nature of tuberculosis control in South Asia's densely urbanized centers, where crowded housing, inadequate ventilation, and limited access to early diagnosis can accelerate disease transmission. Health authorities continue to prioritize TB screening, treatment adherence, and infection control measures in high-density areas to sustain the downward trend in cases.
