Colombo Stock Exchange closes lower as blue chips weigh

Sri Lanka's primary equity market ended the session in negative territory, with the benchmark index retreating from recent levels. The sell-off was broadly distributed across major holdings, signalling cautious investor sentiment in the local bourse.

Capital goods stocks dominated trading volumes on the day, indicating active repositioning among market participants despite the overall downward pressure. This sector rotation underscored shifting portfolio preferences as investors assessed valuations across different segments of the market.

Among the day's significant decliners, diversified conglomerate Cargills (Ceylon) led losses among the blue chip cohort. Telecommunications operator Dialog Axiata and financial services provider Citizens Development Business Finance also contributed notably to the downside, with substantial selling pressure affecting these major constituents.

The session reflected broader consolidation in the market following previous gains, with investors appearing to take profits from holdings ahead of potential corporate announcements and economic data. The capital goods sector's prominence in turnover suggested institutional rebalancing rather than panic-driven selling.
