Commercial sector credit surges to ₹10.65 trillion in four-month period

Commercial sector funding has more than doubled to ₹10.65 trillion during the April-July period, reflecting a sharp acceleration in credit deployment across the Indian economy. The surge underscores growing appetite among businesses for capital to finance expansion and operations amid improving economic conditions.

Non-food bank credit has jumped dramatically to ₹6.69 trillion, compared with ₹0.73 trillion in the corresponding period last year, marking a near nine-fold increase. This exceptional growth in commercial lending suggests banks are becoming increasingly confident in the creditworthiness of business borrowers and the overall economic trajectory.

The expansion extends beyond traditional bank lending. Total outstanding credit from both bank and non-bank sources rose 17.4 per cent by the end of July, indicating that alternative financing channels are also contributing significantly to capital flows in the commercial sector. This broader-based credit growth points to increasing participation from non-banking financial companies and other lending institutions.

The acceleration in commercial credit comes at a time when businesses are expected to step up investment and working capital requirements. The sustained growth momentum in lending suggests confidence among financial institutions that the economy is on a sustainable expansion path, supporting credit-driven activity across sectors.
