The Communist Party of Sri Lanka (CPSL) has raised concerns over what it describes as a covert plan to develop a spaceport facility on Sri Lanka's eastern shores, involving Israeli and other international actors. In a statement released yesterday, party General Secretary Dr. G. Weerasinghe warned that such a project would represent a significant encroachment on national sovereignty and alleged connections to broader US strategic interests in space operations.

The party's statement contends that the incumbent NPP government may be facilitating these foreign space-related activities, though specific details regarding the alleged plan remain unclear. The CPSL has historically taken positions critical of foreign military and strategic installations on Sri Lankan territory.

The allegations come amid ongoing discussions about Sri Lanka's international partnerships and the use of its geographic position for regional activities. Such claims typically provoke debate about the balance between foreign investment and technological development against concerns over territorial sovereignty and strategic autonomy.

No official government response to the Communist Party's allegations has yet been issued. The matter reflects broader tensions within Sri Lankan political discourse regarding the nation's role in regional geopolitical dynamics and international defence cooperation.
