Comoros condemns France over aid-migration linkage proposal

The government of Comoros has sharply criticised France's suggestion that development aid could be made conditional on the island nation's cooperation in controlling irregular migration flows to Mayotte, a French overseas territory in the Indian Ocean.

French Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu indicated that Paris was considering leveraging development assistance as a tool to encourage greater collaboration in stemming undocumented migration to Mayotte, which has experienced significant population pressures from neighbouring islands.

Comoros officials view the proposal as an inappropriate use of aid as political leverage, arguing that development assistance should be provided based on humanitarian and developmental needs rather than migration control objectives. The dispute highlights ongoing tensions between France and its Indian Ocean neighbours over irregular migration patterns and the responsibilities of origin and destination countries.

Mayette, which remains a French collectivity despite being geographically part of the Comoros archipelago, has become a focal point for regional migration debates. France has previously sought regional cooperation on migration management, but the conditional aid approach has drawn criticism from neighbouring governments as coercive and counterproductive to regional relations.
