Competency-based assessment key for intermediate boards, says PARAKH-NCERT chief
The head of PARAKH-NCERT has called on intermediate education boards to prioritise assessments that evaluate student understanding and analytical skills rather than rote learning. The push comes as Andhra Pradesh's intermediate board adopts an integrated exam management system.

Indrani Bhaduri, CEO of PARAKH-NCERT, has stressed the importance of shifting assessment frameworks towards competency-based evaluation at the intermediate level. Speaking on educational standards, Bhaduri emphasised that examination questions should be designed to test students' understanding, application, analysis and reasoning abilities rather than memorisation.
The call aligns with broader efforts across India's education sector to move away from traditional testing methods. Competency-based assessments are seen as essential tools for identifying whether students have genuinely grasped concepts and can apply knowledge to real-world scenarios.
The Board of Intermediate Education, Andhra Pradesh (BIEAP) has taken a step in this direction by adopting an Integrated Ticketing and Management System (ITMS) for examination administration. The move has drawn appreciation from PARAKH-NCERT leadership as a practical measure to modernise examination processes.
Education experts argue that competency-focused assessments better prepare students for higher education and professional challenges, where critical thinking and problem-solving skills are increasingly valued alongside subject knowledge.
