Comprehensive sanctions regime continues to constrain Iran's economy

Iran's economy remains subject to one of the world's most stringent sanctions regimes, reflecting decades of international isolation and geopolitical tensions. The restrictions encompass broad-based financial penalties, including severe limitations on banking operations and access to the international financial system, alongside targeted measures against Iranian individuals and entities deemed to pose security risks.

United States sanctions form the backbone of the enforcement architecture, particularly following Washington's 2018 withdrawal from the nuclear accord known as the JCPOA. These measures target Iran's oil sector, shipping industry, metals trade, and automotive manufacturing, alongside restrictions on aviation and access to crucial components. The EU maintains parallel sanctions aligned with UN Security Council resolutions, though European measures have occasionally diverged from American policy.

The sanctions landscape extends beyond traditional trade restrictions to encompass humanitarian considerations. While certain carve-outs exist for food and medicine, banking complications have nonetheless impeded Iran's ability to conduct routine commercial transactions. These financial constraints have compounded economic pressures from currency depreciation, inflation, and capital flight, constraining Tehran's capacity to invest in critical infrastructure and economic modernization.

Iranian officials have repeatedly protested the sanctions as violations of international law, while Western governments maintain the measures are necessary responses to concerns regarding Iran's nuclear program, regional military activities, and human rights record. The sanctions regime remains subject to potential modification through diplomatic negotiations, though such pathways have proven elusive in recent years.
