Congo Ebola outbreak surges past 5,000 cases amid response challenges

The outbreak has emerged as the fastest-spreading Ebola epidemic on record, according to data released Wednesday by Congo's Ministry of Health. Official figures show 5,021 cases and 2,378 fatalities as of Sunday, with transmission accelerating across some of the country's most difficult-to-access areas.

Health authorities have warned that the virus is advancing three times faster than the 2014-2016 West African epidemic, which killed more than 11,000 people and held the previous record for deadliest Ebola outbreak. The current crisis is unfolding under conditions that favour rapid spread, including active armed conflict, widespread displacement of populations, and significant movement of people across affected zones.

Response teams are struggling to keep pace with transmission rates despite mobilization efforts. The remote geography of affected regions, combined with ongoing insecurity and population instability, has hampered vaccination campaigns, contact tracing, and isolation of confirmed cases—core strategies needed to arrest an Ebola outbreak.
