The party alleges the government rushed implementation without adequate consideration of long-term security implications.

The Congress party mounted a fresh offensive against the Agnipath scheme on Tuesday, with senior party leader Rohit Chaudhary contending that the recruitment model poses significant risks to India's national security architecture. Chaudhary argued that the scheme's hasty introduction reflected inadequate planning and consultation with military stakeholders.
According to the Congress position, the Agnipath framework undermines established cadre management practices and disrupts the continuity of military training systems that have evolved over decades. Party representatives contend that the scheme's four-year engagement model creates structural vulnerabilities in force composition and institutional knowledge retention within the armed forces.
The Congress has demanded complete withdrawal of the scheme, positioning its stance as a defence of India's security interests. The party claims the recruitment model fails to address the specialized requirements of modern military operations and creates gaps in hierarchical command structures essential for operational effectiveness.
The Agnipath scheme, introduced in June 2022, aims to recruit personnel on a fixed-term contractual basis. The initiative has remained controversial since its rollout, facing criticism from multiple quarters including defence analysts, veterans' associations, and political opposition parties who have raised concerns about its structural implications.
