Congress attacks BJP over Haldwani temple ritual row

The Congress party has launched a fresh attack on the BJP, accusing it of betraying casteist leanings in the wake of controversy surrounding a ritual performed at a temple in Haldwani, Uttarakhand.

The political confrontation emerged after Mahendra Bhatt, chief of the Uttarakhand BJP unit, dismissed opposition criticism of the ritual by stating that the venue had been "polluted" by slogans deemed inappropriate for a religious space. His comments were aimed at addressing concerns raised by opposition parties over the religious ceremony.

Congress leaders seized on Bhatt's language to argue that the BJP's response demonstrated the party's caste-based ideology. The opposition party contended that the use of the term "pollution" in reference to dissenting voices reflected regressive attitudes associated with caste hierarchies.

The incident has intensified political tensions in Uttarakhand ahead of ongoing political developments in the state. Both parties have used the Haldwani temple dispute to consolidate their respective positions on social and religious issues that remain contentious in state politics.
