Congress attacks government over alleged MGNREGA scheme irregularities in Maharashtra

Congress leader Jairam Ramesh has launched a scathing attack on the government over alleged irregularities in the implementation of the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) in Maharashtra. Ramesh cited a media investigation revealing a significant gap between official records and ground reality in the drought-hit Beed district. According to the report, thousands of workers were listed as active under the scheme in official documentation, yet field verification at five separate sites uncovered no workers present on the ground. The discrepancy raises serious questions about fund utilization and the actual beneficiaries of the employment scheme. Ramesh characterized the allegations as evidence of systematic mismanagement, suggesting that the scheme designed to provide rural employment has been compromised by administrative failures or deliberate irregularities. The Congress leader's remarks add to mounting scrutiny of how government welfare programs are being administered in rural areas, particularly in states experiencing severe drought conditions. The Maharashtra government has not yet issued an official response to the allegations. MGNREGA, one of India's flagship rural employment schemes, guarantees 100 days of work annually to rural households, and such implementation gaps could significantly impact vulnerable populations dependent on guaranteed wage employment.
