The Gokul Milk Federation election has become a flashpoint for political tensions in Maharashtra, with Congress levelling serious allegations against the BJP over the conduct of the poll. Following the announcement of results on November 5, Congress accused the BJP of manipulating votes cast by milk producers, claiming irregularities undermined the democratic process in the cooperative election.
Satej Patil's panel, backed by BJP interests, secured 13 of the 25 contested seats in the federation election, giving it decisive control of the dairy cooperative. The Congress party, which fielded its own slate of candidates, has contested the legitimacy of the outcome, asserting that the victory was achieved through improper means rather than genuine voter preference.
The clash reflects broader competition between the two national parties for influence over Maharashtra's cooperative sector, which plays a significant role in the state's agricultural economy. Dairy federations like Gokul wield considerable power over milk procurement, pricing, and distribution, making control of their governance structures a prize for political factions.
Neither party has provided detailed evidence to support its position, but the intensity of the dispute suggests deep divisions within Maharashtra's political establishment over the management of cooperative institutions. The controversy underscores persistent concerns about the politicisation of cooperative bodies that are meant to serve producer interests independently.
