Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge on Tuesday paid tribute to former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, crediting him with preparing the nation for the opportunities and challenges of the 21st century. Kharge said Gandhi's legacy represented a commitment to modernisation and progress that remained relevant to contemporary India.
In his remarks, Kharge outlined what he described as the most fitting tribute to Gandhi's memory. "Perhaps the most meaningful tribute to Rajiv Ji would be to strengthen India's timeless spirit of empathy, harmony and reconciliation, while nurturing intellectual freedom, innovation and the aspirations of our young people," the Congress leader said.
Kharge's statement underscores the Congress party's continued emphasis on Gandhi's contributions to India's technological and economic development during his tenure as Prime Minister from 1984 to 1989. The party has long positioned Gandhi as a visionary leader who championed computer education and modernisation initiatives.
The remarks come as the Congress party continues to invoke Gandhi's legacy as part of its broader political messaging, particularly in appealing to younger voters and emphasising themes of national unity and progress.
