Congress Chief Kharge Levels Six Charges Against Election Commissioner

The Indian National Congress president leveled six formal charges against Election Commission Chief Gyanesh Kumar during a symbolic parliamentary session convened by the INDIA coalition on Tuesday. Speaking during the mock proceeding, Kharge contended that the election commissioner had breached his constitutional duties and acted in coordination with the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party.

The opposition alliance's theatrical impeachment exercise, held outside the formal legislative process, aimed to highlight their grievances regarding the functioning of India's election machinery. Kharge's allegations centered on claims that Kumar had compromised the independence of the Election Commission, an institution mandated to remain impartial in overseeing the country's electoral processes.

The mock impeachment represents an escalation of tensions between the opposition and the government over the administration of recent electoral exercises. The INDIA bloc, a coalition of opposition parties, has increasingly challenged what they characterize as institutional imbalances favoring the ruling dispensation.

The Election Commission has not yet responded to the accusations. Constitutional experts note that impeachment proceedings against election commissioners require formal parliamentary procedures and cannot be initiated through symbolic demonstrations, though opposition parties have used such measures to amplify their political messaging.
