Congress demands CEC resignation, cites 'illegal orders' criticism

The Congress intensified its attack on Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar on Monday, demanding his immediate resignation and alleging he has become a "liability for the country" due to his willingness to execute what party leaders described as "illegal orders."

Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh's remarks came after Supreme Court Justice Ujjal Bhuyan addressed students at NALSAR University in Hyderabad, stating that any electoral process that "disenfranchises" millions of Indian citizens is "intrinsically arbitrary" and constitutes a "negation" of the constitutional order. Bhuyan added that "no amount of whataboutery can justify it."

Ramesh shared a video clip of Justice Bhuyan's speech on social media, praising the judge for what he termed an exposure of the CEC's conduct. "If he has any sense of shame, Gyanesh Kumar must quit right away," Ramesh posted, asserting that Kumar's actions have compromised his ability to serve as the nation's election watchdog.

The Congress leader's comments reflect ongoing political tensions regarding electoral processes and institutional independence in India. The party has previously used similar terminology in criticizing government decision-making structures.
