Congress infighting in Kerala municipality creates opening for Kerala Congress

A deadlock among rebel Congress leaders in Kerala's Pala municipality threatens to unravel their governing alliance as factional disputes prevent consensus on key positions. The dissident councillors, whose split from the parent Congress party and subsequent alignment with the Left Democratic Front enabled their municipal takeover, have conducted multiple rounds of negotiations without resolving disagreements over the vice-chairperson post.

The stalemate has attracted attention from the Kerala Congress (Maniyan), which had previously decided against contesting for municipal posts. The party is now reconsidering its stance and preparing to field a candidate for the vice-chairperson election scheduled for September 16, according to party insiders.

The Pala municipality election had been marked by significant political realignment, with rebel Congress members breaking ranks to partner with the LDF in securing control. However, internal differences over power-sharing arrangements have emerged as obstacles to smooth governance, threatening to destabilize the alliance.

With the rebel Congress faction unable to present a unified position, the Kerala Congress may exploit the divisions to secure representation in municipal leadership. The September 16 election will test whether the fractious rebel group can hold its formation intact or whether it will face further erosion of its municipal influence.
