Congress stakes claim to 200 seats in UP alliance talks with Samajwadi Party

Friction over seat distribution between Congress and the Samajwadi Party continues to mount as both parties position themselves for the upcoming 2027 Uttar Pradesh assembly elections. Congress in-charge Rajendra Pal Gautam on Monday stated that the party should receive a minimum of 200 seats in any alliance arrangement, marking a significant shift from earlier discussions.

Gautam's assertion appears to contradict claims by the Samajwadi Party, which had reportedly offered Congress 150 seats. The Congress leader justified his demand by highlighting his party's historical contributions to India's development and governance, contending that equal respect and equitable share in the alliance are non-negotiable.

The seat-sharing dispute underscores the delicate balance required in forging alliances in India's most populous state, where electoral arithmetic remains crucial for anti-incumbency campaigns. Both parties have positioned themselves as key players in challenging the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party's dominance in the state.

Alliance negotiations between Congress and the Samajwadi Party have previously faced similar impasses over seat allocation. The outcome of these discussions will significantly impact the opposition's combined electoral strategy in Uttar Pradesh, where assembly elections are scheduled for 2027.
