The Congress party has decided to observe a Black Day to protest against the treatment of its leaders by Delhi Police, characterizing the incident as a breach of democratic norms. The party's leadership has condemned what it describes as the manhandling of opposition figures, including the Leader of the Opposition and other elected representatives.
In a statement, Congress officials argued that the incident represents more than an assault on individual leaders. "This assault on Leader of the Opposition and the elected representatives of the people is an assault on the Constitution itself," the party said, underscoring its view that the incident violates fundamental democratic principles.
The Black Day observance is expected to serve as a show of solidarity among opposition lawmakers and a public demonstration against what Congress views as unwarranted use of force by law enforcement. The party has positioned the protest as a defence of constitutional values and the rights of elected representatives to function without intimidation.
The incident adds to existing tensions between the ruling government and opposition parties regarding the treatment of political leaders during public demonstrations and parliamentary activities in the national capital.
