The Montana-based conservation group American Prairie has completed its purchase of Anchor Ranch, adding 70,000 acres to its growing portfolio of protected lands. The acquisition represents a major step in the organisation's long-term vision to create an expansive nature preserve across the American West, bringing it closer to its goal of establishing the largest such reserve in the continental United States.
The ranch purchase includes access improvements via part of Bullwhacker Road, which will enhance connectivity to public lands in the region. This element of the deal addresses logistical considerations for both conservation efforts and public access to natural areas across the region.
Operations on the property will remain largely unchanged, with current ranching families who lease portions of the land continuing their activities. This approach reflects a conservation model that attempts to balance environmental preservation with the continuation of traditional land-use practices in rural Montana.
The expansion has not been without criticism, however. Some observers have raised concerns that large-scale land acquisitions by conservation groups could drive up property values in surrounding areas, potentially undermining the economic viability of ranching operations that form the backbone of rural communities in the region.
