The Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) has levied a ₹10 lakh fine against bike-taxi aggregator Rapido for engaging in misleading advertising and unfair business practices. The action was taken following an investigation into consumer complaints against the platform.
Headed by Chief Commissioner Nidhi Khare and Commissioner Anupam Mishra, the CCPA found that Rapido violated consumer protection norms through deceptive marketing claims and unfair contractual terms. The regulator directed the company to cease the identified practices and ensure compliance with applicable consumer protection laws going forward.
The penalty underscores intensifying regulatory scrutiny of ride-hailing and bike-taxi platforms operating across India. Consumer protection authorities have increasingly focused on examining advertising claims made by such services, particularly regarding safety, pricing, and service quality.
The CCPA is currently conducting parallel examinations of competing platforms Uber and Ola regarding similar concerns. Industry observers expect the outcomes of these investigations could result in stricter compliance requirements across the sector and potentially shape operational guidelines for aggregator-based mobility services in India.
