KUALA LUMPUR — Lian Tan Chuan, a businessman whose Bumiputera construction firm Nepturis Sdn Bhd secured a government contract, testified on Tuesday that he provided RM1 million to the Bersatu political party based on representations that Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin had facilitated the project award.
The testimony forms part of the prosecution case against the former prime minister, who faces charges related to alleged abuses of power. Lian said he made the payment to Bersatu after being informed of Muhyiddin's purported role in helping his company win the contract.
The witness account appears to establish a potential link between the former premier's position and business advantages allegedly granted to connected parties. The trial continues as prosecutors present evidence of the alleged nexus between political influence and corporate benefits.
Muhyiddin, who served as prime minister from 2020 to 2021, has denied wrongdoing. The case remains one of several high-profile legal proceedings involving senior Malaysian political figures.
