An advertisement promoting zero-interest loans through romantic messaging has become the subject of political controversy in Tamil Nadu's capital. The ad, which appeared on the interior panels of Chennai Metro coaches, used the tagline 'Girlfriend Gives 0% Interest' to market personal loans, prompting calls for regulatory action.
DMK MP Thamizhachi Thangapandian shared images of the advertisement on social media, questioning the decision to permit such messaging in public transportation spaces. The lawmaker demanded an explanation from authorities regarding the vetting process for advertisements displayed within metro coaches and called for immediate action against those who approved the campaign.
The incident highlights ongoing concerns about the regulation of advertising content in public spaces, particularly in government-funded transportation infrastructure. While personal finance companies frequently use humor and unconventional messaging in their marketing campaigns, placement of such ads in high-traffic public venues has periodically triggered scrutiny from political leaders and civil society groups.
Chennai Metro Rail Limited, which operates the metro system, has not issued a formal statement regarding the matter. The controversy underscores the tension between commercial advertising interests and community standards for content displayed in public facilities used by diverse audiences.
