Convicted Bosnian war criminal Mladic dies in Dutch prison
Ratko Mladic, the Bosnian Serb military commander convicted of genocide and crimes against humanity during the 1990s Balkan conflict, has died while serving a life sentence at a detention facility in The Hague.

Mladic, who led Bosnian Serb forces during the brutal 1992-1995 war, passed away while imprisoned at the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY). He had been serving a life sentence following his 2017 conviction for orchestrating some of the deadliest massacres of the conflict, including the Srebrenica genocide that claimed approximately 8,000 Muslim lives.
The 78-year-old military commander was arrested in 2011 after 16 years evading international authorities. His trial lasted several years and detailed systematic killings, ethnic cleansing, and forced deportations carried out under his command across Bosnia and Herzegovina during the war's devastating four-year span.
Mladic's death marks the end of a significant chapter in post-Cold War international justice. His capture and conviction were considered landmarks in the prosecution of wartime atrocities, establishing precedents for how the international community addresses crimes against humanity.
Serbian officials have indicated plans for a state funeral, a position that has drawn criticism from victims' advocates and regional observers who view such recognition as inappropriate for a convicted war criminal.
