Couple convicted in $400,000 GoFundMe scam targeting homeless veteran
A fundraising campaign that raised over $400,000 from more than 14,000 donors for a homeless veteran has been exposed as an elaborate fraud, with the organisers accused of misappropriating funds for personal luxury purchases.

Katelyn McClure and Mark D'Amico orchestrated a crowdfunding campaign on GoFundMe claiming they had collected donations to help Johnny Bobbitt Jr., a homeless military veteran, after he allegedly assisted McClure during a roadside emergency involving her vehicle running out of fuel. The emotionally resonant narrative succeeded in attracting contributions from over 14,000 donors worldwide, accumulating approximately $400,000 in funds.
Investigators later determined that the entire premise of the campaign was fabricated. Rather than directing the collected funds toward supporting Bobbitt, the couple reportedly diverted substantial portions of the money toward personal expenditures, including luxury goods and services. The deception left thousands of well-intentioned donors believing their contributions were aiding someone in genuine need.
Bobbitt subsequently initiated legal proceedings to recover the funds that had been donated on his behalf. The case highlighted vulnerabilities in online crowdfunding platforms and raised questions about verification mechanisms designed to prevent fraudulent campaigns from gaining traction.
The incident serves as a cautionary reminder to donors about the importance of verifying the legitimacy of charitable campaigns before contributing, particularly those circulated through social media and crowdfunding websites.
