Court hears allegations over funds channelled to Bersatu party

An MACC officer told the court on Tuesday that Muhyiddin Yassin provided no justification for directing contractors who secured Jana Wibawa infrastructure contracts to contribute funds to Bersatu, his political party.

The investigator's testimony came as part of ongoing proceedings examining the flow of money to the party. According to the prosecution's account, Muhyiddin allegedly requested that successful bidders for the government-linked projects make financial contributions to Bersatu, raising questions about potential improper linkages between public procurement and party financing.

The defence has contended that the funds transferred to Bersatu did not constitute political donations but rather represented legitimate business transactions or other arrangements. However, the MACC investigator stated that Muhyiddin failed to provide clarification or documentation supporting this characterization during questioning.

The Jana Wibawa initiative, a rural infrastructure development programme, has become central to the investigation into Bersatu's funding sources. The court heard evidence relating to multiple transactions between contractors and the party during the period when Muhyiddin held office.

The case continues to draw scrutiny regarding transparency in political party financing and the relationship between government contracts and party funding mechanisms in Malaysia.
