Court hears defence objections to imprisoned monk's prison attire

Legal representatives for imprisoned Buddhist monk Gnanasara Thera have objected to him being made to wear prison clothing, arguing that only senior ecclesiastical authorities can make decisions regarding his monastic robes.

Defence counsel for Gnanasara Thera has raised formal objections to the removal of the monk's religious attire while in custody, contending that such decisions fall exclusively within the authority of Mahanayake Theras, the most senior figures in Sri Lanka's Buddhist monastic hierarchy.

The objection was presented during court proceedings concerning the imprisoned cleric, with legal representatives arguing that stripping him of his robes violates established protocols governing the treatment of ordained Buddhist monks within the penal system.

According to traditional Buddhist institutional practice, only the most senior Mahanayake Theras possess the ecclesiastical authority to determine matters related to a monk's robes and monastic status. Defence counsel maintained that prison authorities therefore lack the jurisdiction to impose such changes unilaterally.

The case highlights the intersection of Sri Lanka's criminal justice system and the country's Buddhist religious institutions, raising questions about the appropriate treatment of ordained clergy in custodial settings and the recognition of religious authority within the penal framework.

Court proceedings continue as the matter is being adjudicated, with the defence pressing for adherence to established religious protocols regarding the handling of monastic personnel in the custody of state authorities.
