Colombo High Court Judge Buddhika C. Ragala made the determination on Friday while hearing a case involving allegations of derogatory remarks allegedly made by Gnanasara Thera. During the proceedings, the judge observed that the court lacked the legal authority to order prison officials to reinstate the religious robes that were removed from the monk while in custody.

The removal of monastic robes from a Buddhist monk raises questions about the intersection of prison regulations and religious freedom protections. The judge's observation suggests that matters concerning the administration of prison property and inmate dress codes fall outside the scope of judicial intervention in this context.

The case against Gnanasara Thera, who serves as General Secretary of the Bodu Bala Sena organization, continues to proceed through the courts. The exact nature and details of the alleged remarks at the centre of the proceedings remain subject to legal proceedings.

The ruling underscores ongoing tensions between custodial authorities' administrative powers and the rights of religious practitioners within the prison system.
