The Court of Appeal rejected the petition on Tuesday, dismissing Jayaweera's legal challenge to a complaint filed by the Colombo Fort Magistrate in relation to the contempt proceedings initiated against the Member of Parliament.

The decision by the three-judge appellate bench comes as proceedings continue against Jayaweera in connection with alleged contempt of court. The dismissal of the writ petition removes one legal avenue available to the MP to challenge the underlying complaint.

Contempt of court charges typically relate to conduct or statements deemed to undermine the authority or dignity of the judiciary. The specific allegations against Jayaweera have not been detailed in the court's ruling.

The rejection of the petition marks a significant development in the legal matter involving the Sarvajana Balaya Party leader, whose party has gained prominence in recent Sri Lankan political discourse. The case is expected to proceed through the magistrate's court system.
