Court petition filed to block removal of imprisoned monk's robes

The petition was filed by Venerable Thiniyawala Palitha Thera, who has sought an order from the Court of Appeal to quash the decision by prison authorities regarding the removal of the robe from the imprisoned monk.

Venerable Galagoda Aththe Gnanasara Thera is currently in custody serving a prison sentence. The circumstances surrounding the prison authorities' decision to remove his monastic robes have prompted the legal challenge.

The petition names the Commissioner-General of Prisons and the Minister of Justice among the respondents. The case raises questions about the treatment of incarcerated religious figures and their right to maintain religious identity while in custody.

The Court of Appeal is expected to consider the merits of the petition, which seeks to prevent the implementation of the administrative decision affecting the imprisoned cleric's status as a member of the Buddhist sangha.
