The Colombo Chief Magistrate's Court on Wednesday rejected a motion to withdraw an order that prohibits Buddhist monks from continuing their occupation near the Buddha statue at Viharamahadevi Park. The restriction, issued on Tuesday, prevents the monks from staging their ongoing Satyagraha demonstration demanding the release of Ven. Galagoda Aththe Gnanasara Thera.
Chief Magistrate Asanga upheld the original order despite the monks' attempt to have it rescinded through the motion filed before the court. The decision represents a significant legal hurdle for the religious group seeking to maintain their peaceful protest at the prominent Colombo landmark.
The Satyagraha, a form of non-violent resistance, has drawn attention to the detention of the senior Buddhist monk. The court's ruling now restricts the monks' ability to continue their demonstration at the park's Buddha statue, though it remains unclear whether alternative protest venues have been considered or permitted.
The case underscores ongoing tensions between public demonstration rights and court-ordered restrictions in Sri Lanka, particularly when demonstrations involve religious figures and institutions.
