Cox's Bazar's beaches are experiencing intensified erosion that has prompted growing concern among coastal management authorities and environmental researchers. The seaside district, renowned for its tourism appeal and fishing communities, is witnessing increased land loss as waves and tidal forces steadily reclaim territory that once housed settlements and agricultural land.

Experts attribute the accelerating erosion to multiple interconnected factors. Rising sea levels linked to climate change, combined with reduced sediment flow from upstream river systems and increased storm surge frequency, have created conditions favourable to rapid coastal degradation. The construction of embankments and dams in upstream regions has further diminished natural sediment replenishment, leaving beaches more vulnerable to wave action.

The phenomenon carries significant implications for the region's estimated 4.5 million inhabitants. Communities dependent on fishing and tourism face displacement pressures, while critical infrastructure including roads, schools, and health facilities face inundation risk. The erosion also threatens the livelihoods of boat builders and small-scale traders whose operations are located in coastal areas.

Environmental scientists emphasise that current erosion rates indicate broader climate vulnerability affecting Bangladesh's entire coastal zone. Without comprehensive coastal management interventions including mangrove restoration, sediment management programs, and climate adaptation strategies, the erosion trend is expected to accelerate further in coming decades, potentially displacing hundreds of thousands of residents.
