CPI(M) chief attacks ED over alleged political targeting by BJP

M.A. Baby, general secretary of the CPI(M), has launched a sharp attack on the Enforcement Directorate, alleging that the agency has overstepped its mandate by targeting the party for what he claims are politically motivated reasons.

Baby contended that the ED's actions represent a fundamental error in judgment, asserting that the agency has effectively become an instrument of the BJP's political agenda rather than functioning as an independent enforcement body.

The CPI(M) leader also turned his criticism towards the Congress party's Kerala unit, particularly targeting Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan. Baby accused the Congress leadership of failing to mount an adequate political response to the ED's actions, suggesting that their stance has given undue legitimacy to the agency's moves.

The accusations come amid ongoing tensions between India's opposition parties and various central agencies, with multiple opposition-ruled states alleging selective enforcement and political targeting. The CPI(M)'s latest comments add to a chorus of criticism from left-wing and opposition parties regarding what they characterise as the weaponisation of investigative agencies.
