CPI(M) opposes linking biometric data to welfare benefit eligibility

The CPI(M) has launched a strong protest against suggestions to mandate biometric and voter ID verification as conditions for accessing welfare benefits, terming the proposal an attack on India's poorest citizens.

Party officials argue that such linkages would create additional barriers for vulnerable populations in rural areas who already face challenges in accessing government assistance programs. The measure, they contend, would effectively exclude many eligible beneficiaries from receiving support they are entitled to under various social security schemes.

The party has called on the government to abandon what it describes as an exclusionary policy decision. The CPI(M) maintains that welfare distribution systems should be streamlined through means-testing and transparent processes, rather than through technological requirements that may disproportionately affect marginalized communities.

This opposition reflects broader concerns among opposition parties and civil society groups about the implementation of digital identification systems in India's social welfare infrastructure, particularly regarding access and inclusion for vulnerable populations.
