CPI(M) seeks massive drought relief package for Andhra Pradesh farmers

The Communist Party of India (Marxist) has called for an emergency drought relief package worth ₹1 lakh crore for farmers in Andhra Pradesh, citing inadequate government response to a deteriorating agricultural crisis.

Party State secretary Srinivasa Rao attributed the worsening situation to administrative inaction, despite meteorological warnings issued well in advance about severe El Niño conditions expected to ravage the state. The party contended that early preparedness measures could have mitigated the impact on the farming community.

The demand underscores growing concerns over the scale of drought-related distress in Andhra Pradesh, with agricultural communities facing significant crop losses and water scarcity. The proposed relief package would address immediate farmer welfare needs, including compensation for crop damage and support for livelihood restoration.

The CPI(M)'s intervention reflects broader political pressure on the state administration to announce comprehensive drought mitigation measures. Agricultural distress has become a contentious issue in the state, with various opposition parties demanding stronger intervention and financial support from the government to protect farming communities from climate-induced shocks.
