CPI(M) seeks police action over activist crackdown allegations

A delegation of CPI(M) leaders met with the Home Minister on Tuesday to lodge formal complaints against police conduct, specifically targeting officers from a Cantonment police station. The party alleged that the officers had demonstrated political prejudice in their handling of student activists and employed disproportionate force during arrests.

The Student Federation of India, the student wing of the CPI(M), named two officers in their complaint, accusing them of abusing their authority to target party workers. According to the delegation, the incidents reflect a pattern of politically motivated police action that undermines democratic freedoms and the right to peaceful protest.

Meanwhile, representatives from the Bharatiya Janata Party separately met with the State Police Commissioner to present their perspective on the matter. The dual meetings underline the ongoing tensions between regional political parties over policing practices and accusations of partisan law enforcement.

The Home Ministry has reportedly acknowledged receipt of the complaints and indicated that the allegations will be examined through established investigative procedures. The incident highlights persistent concerns about the politicisation of police forces across Indian states and their impact on civil liberties.
