Crude oil plunges toward biggest weekly loss; India set to benefit

Global crude oil prices are tracking their most significant weekly decline in months, driven by easing concerns over US-Iran relations and broader expectations of softening demand pressures. Brent crude has fallen 16 per cent from its October 30 peak, marking a substantial reversal from earlier highs that had strained energy costs across Asia's third-largest economy.

For India, the downward price movement offers a welcome reprieve from ballooning oil import bills that have weighed heavily on the country's current account deficit and fiscal pressures. As a net energy importer dependent on crude shipments for roughly 80 per cent of domestic consumption, India remains highly sensitive to global petroleum price swings.

State-run oil companies, including Indian Oil Corporation and Bharat Petroleum, stand to benefit from lower crude acquisition costs, potentially reversing recent quarterly losses stemming from elevated international prices. Improved margins at these firms could ease pressure on downstream fuel prices and reduce government subsidy requirements.

Analysts cautioned, however, that crude prices remain volatile and subject to geopolitical developments. The sustainability of current price levels will depend on whether diplomatic progress between major powers continues and global economic growth indicators stabilize in coming weeks.
