Cruise ship docks in Nagoya as Asian Games accommodation woes persist

The Costa Serena pulled into Nagoya's port on Tuesday, marking an unconventional response to housing pressures facing organisers of the continental sporting event. The cruise ship will serve as temporary accommodation for participants competing in the Games, supplementing traditional hotel and dormitory arrangements across the Japanese city.

Local authorities and Games organisers have faced mounting criticism from athletes and delegations regarding the availability and standard of lodging facilities. Some participants reported difficulties securing adequate accommodation, while others voiced concerns about the distance of assigned lodgings from competition venues.

The arrival of the Italian vessel represents one of several measures undertaken to alleviate the accommodation crunch as the Games enter their second week. Officials have indicated that the ship's berthing in Nagoya will remain in place through the Games' conclusion on October 4, providing additional capacity where needed.
