Crypto billionaires donate £72m to UK's Reform party, sparking donation concerns

The donations—£36 million each from BitMEX co-founder Ben Delo and crypto investor Christopher Harborne—represent one of the largest single contributions to a British political party in recent years. Harborne announced on Saturday that he would match Delo's contribution, citing his belief that Reform UK's economic policies would attract investment and strengthen Britain's fiscal position.

Harborne justified his backing by arguing that the party's agenda would generate revenue needed to fund the National Health Service, education and other essential public services. His statement came after Delo's initial donation sparked immediate scrutiny from political observers and rival parties concerned about the scale and source of the funding.

The contributions have intensified longstanding concerns about political donations in Britain. The Liberal Democrats, the third-largest party in the House of Commons, called for Prime Minister Andy Burnham to introduce caps on individual donations to prevent what they characterise as the corruption of the democratic process through unlimited billionaire contributions.

The donations underscore the growing influence of cryptocurrency entrepreneurs in British politics and raise questions about the adequacy of current regulations governing political financing. Reform UK has not yet responded to demands for greater transparency regarding the motivations behind accepting such substantial sums from the digital assets sector.
