Crypto.com has announced plans to shut down its consumer-facing application in Hong Kong, effective February, as the platform recalibrates its regional strategy amid evolving regulatory requirements.
The cryptocurrency exchange said it will cease offering retail trading services through its existing consumer app in the territory. However, the company is not entirely exiting the Hong Kong market. Instead, Crypto.com is pursuing a virtual asset trading platform licence through Foris DAX HK, a separate entity, signalling its intent to maintain a regulated presence in the jurisdiction.
The decision underscores the challenging regulatory environment facing cryptocurrency platforms in Hong Kong. Authorities have tightened oversight of digital asset trading in recent years, requiring platforms to obtain proper licensing to operate legally.
Crypto.com's move to pursue a formal licence through a distinct entity suggests the company is adapting to Hong Kong's regulatory framework, which mandates segregation between different business operations. The transition follows similar actions by other major crypto platforms adjusting their operations across Asia to comply with local requirements.
The platform has not disclosed specific details regarding the transition timeline for existing users or whether the new licensed entity will offer comparable services to current consumers.
