Cuba alleges US coercion campaign ahead of UN embargo vote

Cuba has leveled accusations that the United States is leveraging diplomatic pressure and threats of retaliation to discourage countries from supporting a UN resolution critical of the American embargo imposed on the island nation.

Cuban officials stated that Washington has been warning nations of potential consequences, including economic sanctions and diplomatic isolation, should they vote in favour of the measure condemning the embargo at the UN General Assembly.

The assertion reflects longstanding tensions between Havana and Washington over the trade restrictions, which have remained largely intact since their implementation in 1960. The annual UN vote on the embargo has become a recurring flashpoint in international relations, with Cuba consistently pushing for international condemnation of what it characterises as an inhumane economic blockade.

The US has traditionally opposed the resolution, arguing that the embargo remains necessary as leverage to encourage democratic reforms on the island. Previous votes have shown substantial international opposition to the embargo, with large majorities of UN member states voting to condemn it.

The accusations underscore the broader diplomatic rift between the two nations and the global divisions over US policy toward Cuba, with smaller and developing nations often caught between competing pressures from Washington and Havana.
