Cultural groups push Kozhikode Corporation to fast-track Tagore Hall rebuild

Cultural organizations in Kozhikode have intensified pressure on the local Corporation to expedite the reconstruction of Tagore Centenary Hall following its demolition. The auditorium, which seated 1,200 people, had been a prominent fixture in the city's cultural landscape, hosting performances, seminars, and community events.

Advocates for the hall's restoration argue that the delay in rebuilding has created a significant gap in the district's cultural infrastructure. They contend that the venue played an essential role in promoting arts, literature, and performances aligned with the legacy of Rabindranath Tagore, the Bengali polymath after whom the hall was named.

The demolition of the structure, undertaken by the Corporation, had been planned as part of civic development or renovation initiatives. However, activists claim the reconstruction process has stalled, leaving the cultural community without a dedicated space for major events and performances.

The push for accelerated reconstruction highlights broader concerns about preserving and rebuilding cultural institutions in Kerala's urban centers. Municipal authorities have not yet announced a revised timeline for completing the new facility or detailed plans for its modern specifications and capacity.
