Current financial strength no shield against future risks: RBI Governor
Reserve Bank Governor Sanjay Malhotra has cautioned that India's present financial resilience should not breed complacency, calling for sustained vigilance to protect the financial system from emerging vulnerabilities.

The Reserve Bank Governor stressed that policymakers must adopt a forward-looking approach to financial stability, moving beyond reactive measures to proactive strengthening of the system's capacity to absorb shocks. Speaking at the Kautilya Economic Conclave, Malhotra outlined five key priorities for regulators and policymakers navigating an increasingly complex financial landscape.
Malhotra acknowledged that India's financial system currently demonstrates considerable strength, underpinned by robust balance sheets across banks and non-banking financial companies. However, he cautioned that this current position should not be mistaken for long-term immunity against future disturbances. "Today's resilience may not necessarily imply tomorrow's immunity, and we are committed to remain vigilant of emerging vulnerabilities and continue to keep our financial system strong and resilient," he said.
The Governor emphasized that financial shocks—whether originating from domestic or external sources—are inevitable features of any economic system. Rather than attempting to prevent such disruptions entirely, policymakers should focus on building institutional frameworks and regulatory safeguards that enable financial institutions to continue providing essential services even during periods of severe stress.
Malhotra's remarks reflect the RBI's broader commitment to macroprudential oversight and systemic risk management as India's financial markets expand in complexity and interconnectedness.
