Cusat engineering school moves classes online after chickenpox cases

The Cochin University of Science and Technology (Cusat) School of Engineering has transitioned to online classes following a chickenpox outbreak identified in one of its hostel blocks. Four confirmed cases have been reported from the residential facility over the past several days, prompting university authorities to implement the precautionary measure.

The shift to digital instruction is intended to minimize contact among students and reduce the risk of further transmission. University officials have not specified a timeline for the resumption of regular in-campus classes, stating that the decision will depend on the disease's progression and recommendations from health authorities.

Chickenpox, a highly contagious viral infection spread through respiratory droplets or direct contact with the characteristic fluid-filled blisters, remains a common concern in institutional settings where students live in close quarters. The hostel environment, with shared facilities and communal living spaces, can facilitate rapid disease spread if containment measures are not implemented promptly.

The university is coordinating with local health officials and has advised affected students to seek medical attention. Authorities are also monitoring other hostel blocks for any additional cases. Students and staff have been instructed to follow standard hygiene protocols and report any symptoms of illness immediately.
