CUSAT shifts to online classes as chickenpox outbreak spreads on campus

Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT) has shifted all classroom instruction to online mode across its Thrikkakara and Marine campuses after multiple chickenpox cases were identified among students on campus. The decision affects all departments and academic centres functioning at both locations.

The university has implemented the precautionary measure to mitigate further transmission of the highly contagious viral disease. According to a CUSAT official, all infected students have been asked to vacate the campus premises to prevent the disease from spreading to other residents.

Chickenpox, caused by the varicella-zoster virus, spreads rapidly through respiratory droplets and direct contact with infected individuals. The outbreak prompted the institution to act swiftly to protect the wider student and staff population.

The university has not specified a timeline for resuming in-campus classes. Academic operations are expected to continue uninterrupted through the online platform, with students and faculty accessing lectures and course materials remotely. The institution has urged anyone displaying symptoms of chickenpox to seek medical attention and report to campus health services.
