Cyber gang poses as law enforcement, swindles retired engineer of ₹10 crore

A retired engineer fell victim to an elaborate online fraud scheme in which cyber criminals posing as law enforcement officials and central government agencies extracted approximately ₹10 crore from the victim over several weeks.

The scam, commonly known as a 'digital arrest' fraud, involved perpetrators contacting the victim and threatening legal action related to alleged financial irregularities. Using social engineering tactics and forged official documentation, the fraudsters convinced the victim of the authenticity of their claims, pressuring him to transfer substantial sums to purported secure government accounts.

The modus operandi followed a pattern increasingly seen across urban India, where scammers exploit elderly or semi-retired professionals' unfamiliarity with digital processes and their anxiety over potential legal complications. The fraudsters typically restrict communication through mainstream channels, forcing victims to use messaging apps and video calls to maintain isolation from legitimate authorities.

Authorities have registered cases under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Information Technology Act. Cyber crime specialists have appealed to citizens to verify official communications directly through government websites and authenticated channels rather than responding to unsolicited contact, particularly those threatening immediate legal action.

The incident adds to growing concerns about sophisticated cyber fraud rings operating across South Asia, with law enforcement agencies coordinating to identify and prosecute organized crime networks engaged in such schemes.
