Cybercriminals target Indians with fake gas disconnection WhatsApp scam
Fraudsters are impersonating gas utility companies on WhatsApp, threatening users with connection cutoffs to trick them into downloading malicious APK files. The scam aims to compromise bank accounts and steal financial information from unsuspecting victims.

Cybercriminals operating across India are deploying a sophisticated WhatsApp-based fraud scheme that exploits consumer fears about utility disconnections. The scammers send fake messages purporting to be from gas service providers, warning recipients that their connections will be terminated imminently unless they take immediate action.
The fraudulent messages direct victims to download an APK file—a malicious Android application package—ostensibly to verify their account details or prevent service disruption. Once installed, the application grants criminals unauthorized access to the victim's mobile device, including banking credentials, personal financial information, and sensitive account data.
With access secured, the scammers then attempt to drain bank accounts and conduct unauthorized transactions. Security experts warn that the scheme's effectiveness lies in its exploitation of time pressure and common utility concerns, which override normal skepticism among targeted users.
Authorities recommend that consumers verify any utility service alerts through official channels rather than responding to unsolicited WhatsApp messages. Users should refrain from downloading applications from unknown sources and exercise caution before providing sensitive information or device permissions in response to urgent-sounding notifications.
Indians are advised to register complaints with local cybercrime authorities and their bank's fraud division immediately if they suspect they have fallen victim to such scams.
